Division Mass Training on Educational Technology Enhancement Program
(Batch 1,2 & 3)
Date: May 23-June 1, 2013
Venue: Pangasinan National High School, Lingayen, Pangasinan

Last May 23 to June 1, the KCIPang Scholars conducted an EdTech training to the 1075 teachers from the different schools in the Division of Pangasinan I. The training was formally opened last May 23, 2013 at the Pangasinan National High School Gymnasium with a prayer, singing of the National Anthem, Pangasinan Hymn and a messages from Dr. Joseph R. Lopez(EPS-1, TLE), Ms. Cecilia F. Olegario(EPS-1, S&T), Dr. Teodora V. Nabor, the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent and Dr. Alma Ruby C. Torio, the Schools Division Superintendent.

The training was in-lined with the K to 12 Curriculum that’s why the teacher participants were given first an overview about DepEd Order No. 73, s. 2012 or also known as the, “Guidelines on the Assessment and Rating of Learning Outcomes Under the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.”
In the training, each teacher trainee was required to bring his/her own laptop and USB stick that will be used during the hands-on activities.
The participants were scheduled to have three (3) day face-to-face training and six (6) day on-line collaboration with the trainers. At the end of the training, each teacher participant must master all the Edtech Tools and create a video project for students that can be used as an instructional material.
During the first face-to-face training, the trainees learned some educational/social sites that can assist them for better facilitation and collaboration with their students like:
§      creating their own gmail address
§                                 commenting in Todaysmeet.com
§                                creating and account in Edmodo and joining the DPang1LeadersBatch3 group
§                          creating a Twitter account and following other educators around the world and learning how to use    hash tag like #KCIPang
§                                 creating an interactive wall through Padlet.com
§                                  looking for media files through CreativeCommons.org
§                                 creating google form, spreadsheet, doc and presentation (google drive)
§                                  manipulating screen casting tools such as jing and screencast-o-matic
The participants were given assignments/activities and surveys that they can do during the on-line collaborations.

In the second face-to-face training, the participants were able to learn how to search in the net using Advanced Google Search and know about the Nextvista.org of Mr. Rushton Hurley and freetech4teahchers.com of Mr. Richard Bryne. In that day, the participants were also introduced to some media tools  that they can used in making their own video project for students like: Audacity, Prezi Desktop and On-line, Windows PhotoStory 3 and Windows Movie Maker . All throughout the session, the participants explored and manipulate the edtech tools.
For the last day of the training, the trainers did some quick sharing of other sites that can be used by the participants like: tinyurl.com, bitly.com, google+, pipl.com, evernote, googlesites, blogger, and QR codes. Some of the video projects of the KCIPang scholar trainers and the participants were shown during the plenary session. In the afternoon, some participants were assigned to have their demo teaching and incorporating some of the edtech tools they have learned in their lessons.
The training was ended by a simple graduation and giving off the certificate of recognition and participation to the trainees.

The event will not be successful without the help and guidance of our Lord and the following people:  Hon. Rachel “Baby” Arenas, Cong. Rosemarie “Baby” Arenas, Dr. Alma Ruby C. Torio, Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Teodora V. Nabor, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, Dr. Joseph R. Screenbird an on-line screencasting tool

I've tried screencasting tools such as jing and screencast-o-matic, these are good tools if you want to show what's going on in the screen of your laptop or computer.
I found a new screencasting tool, it's called screenbird. Just go to screenbird.com
screenbird.com official website

and click "record now" and then  a java message  will pop to run the program.
click "run this time" to allow the control button to appear

After clicking  "run this time", the screen tool will come out and ready to use.

The screen bird control button, click the red dot to record a video
What I like about screenbird is that you don't need to sign-in an account, it's free, the video can be saved in your laptop or uploaded; and most of all, no need to install, just make sure you have an internet connection.
Here's an example of a video I created using screenbird, never mind the singing part,  I'm not a singer. Just want to show how cool screenbird is. It's a new site in the web, so they're still improving; but so far, it works well for me.

This tool is very useful for teachers in sharing an on-line presentation/discussion of a  topic/lesson. You can also add audio to your presentation and your students will download or view it on-line, specially for students who missed your class.

Isn't it great to add something special to your video by making other parts of  it  in still feature while the rest are in motion.
I've already tried these three apps: Cinemagr.Am , Echograph and Flixel
They are all awesome, here are an example of my own cinemagraphs

Why smartphone for science teachers?

I have a smartphone and I'm loving its features. It helps me manage my accounts in twitter, facebook pages, google+ , edmodo, gmail and more. Using my smartphone, I can watch and read articles related to science. I can even surf the net using apps such as google chrome or safari. I can even share pictures without any problem using instagram
Another best feature of it, is that I can create new post for my blog anytime and anywhere. It's amazing how technology now a days aid teachers like me. Smartphones are not only use just for texting and calling, it can also create links to your other interests. It's like having a pocket laptop if you have a smartphone
Teachers must be equipped with this gadget in order to be updated on what's new in the field of education and can reach out to other educators all over the world by just a click.
The following photos are some of the apps my smartphone has:

Isn't these apps of smartphone fantastic. It's handy  because it's lite. For teachers like me, this is a must have, although some smartphones are expensive. But if you have extra cash and you really want to be updated about the latest trends in education, contact other educators and students, do some research etc., then this product of technology is for you! just use it wisely! make sure you have discipline when and when not  to use it.

Purple-Planet (free music) for students and teachers

To teachers and students who are looking for free music that  can  be used  for presentations or projects,  purple-planet.com is the site for you guys. This was a site suggested by my trainer Mr. John Sowash during the KCI Pang training last April 1-12, 2013 at Daniel Maramba National High School, Pangasinan, Philippines. I was given permission by the owner of the site to use the music, specially for educational purposes. The owner also said that it can be used by other educators and students in their video/photo presentations as long as they will cite where they got the music.
What I love about the music they have in purple-planet.com is that most of it are  instrumental in forms and they got three versions of every  music they have. You can choose the longer version or the shorter if you want, it depends on what you need for your project.
Just ignore the "royalty free music" - according to the maker of the site. The site was not updated for quite sometime,  but if you want to read their terms and conditions, just click the using our music for more clarifications.
Enjoy the music of purple-planet.com !!!

2013 Summer Adventure in Baguio City

After my busy schedule from the summer training for teachers, my family went to  Baguio City, the summer capital of the  Philippines to bond and escape the summer heat from lowlands. I even  renewed my PRC  licence for teachers , which by the way their new office is located in (PRC Baguio City).
My son enjoyed playing at the Children's Park which was renovated by the City  Government  of Baguio.
Ryt on the red slide
He enjoyed the different slides in the park. A lot of parents with their children were having a good time. This kind of landmark in the city is a nice place to spend quality time with your family without spending to much money.
a colorful slide at the park
There are so many things that you can do in the park, like having a picnic, enjoy the other features of the park, they even have a mini lagoon where children can enjoy watching the colorful fishes
an orange fish in the children's park mini lagoon
Truly the place is for everyone, not for just children but even for kids at heart, like me ^^
